Across our land from East to west,
We built a great walled defense,
From the foreign who live beyond divide,
Of whom we do not speak their kind.
With thirst of blood and human flesh,
We stay behind our safety fence.
But when we cross, to our back it looms,
The wall becomes our grave and tomb.
This is my F poem for the A to Z challenge.

My A-Z is based on Northumberland, and the myths and monsters that lurk within. You may want to read a couple other poems in my challenge to get the gist.
This one comes from the story of Hadrian’s wall, and the fear of those that lurked beyond it. It’s hugely inspired by The wall in the game of thrones series and books, but it’s our wall and we had one first!!!
Love this! Especially the very last line! Foreboding and hope all in one line! Well done mi dear!
It’s hard work living in Northumberland!
Beautifully written my sister and you have doing an awesome job with the poems you are sharing! I can only smile, while taking delight in your words!
Thankyou for your lovely comment. Thankyou for reading my journey through the a to z!

Thankyou! And thanks for leaving the link to your blog. I’ll check it out today.
Very evocative piece, great job in just a few words.
Thanks. I wanted it 2 lines longer but couldn’t think of anything without ruining it.
Very nice! I like how the fence protects yet entombs.
Thanks! It’s a little short but glad my image came across
Before I read your blurb at the bomb, these lines made me think of Hadrian’s Wall. Mission accomplished with your descriptions! 🙂
ooops, autocorrect made bottom into bomb! Lol!
Hehe! Thanks for following my a to z! And I love writing the little blurbs at the end to explain where my poems come from, I like the story of Hadrians wall, but I’ve changed it up a bit.
That’s a really cool A to Z theme you’ve chosen. I liked this poem!
Thankyou! I’m enjoying writing for it.
very nice. I love the last line. Have a wonderful weekend.
Thankyou, sorry for delay in reply, hope you have a great weekend too.
Love the poem- it has a bouncy feel to it.
Haha thanks for visiting, I think this is the first time my poems have been referred to as bouncy. I like it!
Hi Amy, thanks for stopping by my blog earlier and leaving a comment. When I read your poems, I’m reminded of Daphne du Maurier & the Bronte’s and yes, George RR Martin. I can almost feel the fear.
Great post and great theme.
George has been a massive influence on what i write about as I have been reading his book and also watching game of thrones for a while now. I guess we cant help but be influenced by other writers.
What a beautiful poem! Wrenched my heart right out!
Oh i do hope you get your heart back 😛
This is wonderful! Very cool! Just visiting today from the A-Z Challenge Juliet atCity Muse Country Muse Come visit us. We are doing poetry too.
Great last line 🙂
The wall is a defense, but when crossed becomes a grave. Well expressed verse.
This is great stuff.
I can see it!
